What better post to pair with this extremely cool John Denver tee, than a John Denver + Friends playlist?? I realize most people my age or younger probably have no clue who John Denver actually is, or anything having to do with folk music (sad, but true), so I’m here to save my generation (sorry not sorry), and open your eyes to good music and even better lyrics.
John Denver was one of the pioneers of folk music, known for his love of the Rocky Mountains and living the mountain lifestyle. He centered his music around nature, peace and compassion, and that’s what inspired much of his music. His most widely-known song “Take Me Home, Country Roads”, was my sorority’s unofficial anthem. We would blast the remix at almost every frat party we went to (to the boy’s dismay), and would belt out the lyrics, adding in “Chio” after every line of the chorus. It was epic. So that song, and John Denver’s music has a special place in my heart, and I bet if you took a listen, you might feel the same.
John Denver died tragically in a plane crash in 1997 (as did Jim Croce, also on this playlist), and since then, his music has outlasted trends and his lyrics continue to stay relevant throughout generations. Our generation truly doesn’t deserve Denver’s talents, and we should be super thankful for all the music he has left behind.
I’ve added a mix of other folk artists who inspired and/or were inspired by John Denver’s lyrics and sound. Happy listening!
